Golden Memories
For 50-year members, the Garden has meant inspiration, refuge, and more
The 91短视频 has been celebrating its 50th birthday throughout 2022, and it wouldn鈥檛 be a party without the people who have been with us since the beginning: our members of 50 years.
More than 675 people who joined when the 91短视频 first opened in 1972 are still members today. Here鈥檚 what a few of those inaugural members had to say about what the Garden has meant to them.

鈥淚t鈥檚 absolutely been life-enhancing. I was here with my 12-year-old son on the day it opened; he rolled down the grass hills. I鈥檝e been a volunteer, and I love seeing the Garden grow and change. It鈥檚 been wonderful.鈥

鈥淓arly on when my children were very young, this was my refuge. It was an introduction to the world鈥檚 wonder to them, and it was a way to find a little bit of peace in our otherwise crazy lives. 鈥 I taught for a number of years, and I had copious papers to correct. When I discovered coming over here [on weekends to correct papers], especially during the winter months, and sitting in the Caf茅, looking out through the windows at the beautiful sight of snow drifting down鈥攖hat was my refuge, and that got me through some very difficult years. I had peace and quiet here. So I think that鈥檚 what I come for. It feeds my spirit. It improves me.鈥

鈥淲e remember back when [the Garden as it exists today] was just an aspirational drawing. The two of us said, 鈥業t鈥檒l never happen,鈥 because it was so ambitious. 鈥楴ot in our lifetime.鈥 We couldn鈥檛 imagine that all of that would come to be. And now to see that it鈥檚 far beyond that鈥攁nd to think it鈥檚 near where we live.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 a painter, and I paint flowers. I wanted to come here and take photographs, so I joined the Botanic Garden in the early 鈥70s, and [since then] I鈥檝e had four exhibits here. They were probably the most successful exhibits in my career. I love the Garden, and I鈥檝e loved watching it grow, and I just kept renewing my membership 鈥 and as it grew and expanded and expanded, you鈥檝e got so many people who love this Garden. It means a lot, and I鈥檓 glad to see it鈥檚 been so successful.鈥

鈥淭he Garden was always the place where I could go for inspiration. I love gardening, and my mother-in-law loved gardening too. Every Thursday we would come to the Botanic Garden, and we would go along and take notes on what flowers we saw that we liked. Every time you come, you see yet another thing that you hadn鈥檛 noticed before. That鈥檚 what the Garden has meant to me. The opportunity to be creative.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 like my backyard. I鈥檝e brought my children, and then my grandchildren, and even my great-grandchildren to Halloween [Night of 1,000 Jack-o鈥-Lanterns]. It gets bigger and better every year. [The Garden is] just a wonderful space without intrusions to enjoy the beauty of nature.鈥

鈥淚 walk here three times a week or more. If we moved, we couldn鈥檛 replace it. It鈥檚 my therapy session.鈥

Thank you to all of our members for helping us protect and celebrate the natural world since 1972.
Our future is bright because of them.
